The Krkonose Museum in Four Historical Houses
An example of Krkonose rural architecture and an exhibition of folk art and crafts: the four historical houses offer an extensive permanent exhibition on the history of Vrchlabi as well as Krkonose crafts and folk art.
Vrchlabi is the administrative seat of the Krkonossky National Park, and it is therefore no wonder that there are even two attractive museums on the same topic: one, located in the former Augustinian monastery, focusing on the nature and the unique features of the Krkonossky National Park, and the other, presenting folk art, crafts and the town’s history, that can be found in four historical houses that are among the oldest examples of rural architecture in the Krkonose Mts. and also a rare example of the original town houses.
The Krkonose Museum which is located in the four houses offers an extensive collection of items relating to flax processing in the Krkonose, including samples of cloths that once made the Krkonose weavers famous. Another timbered room is dedicated to painted rural furniture dating back to the turn of the 18th/19th century. One of the four houses offers an exhibition on the history of Vrchlabi and also a gallery. The first floor shows an attic room furnished in the mid-19th century rural style, and examples of the local crafts including figurines of Krakonos, the master of the mountains. Another room is dedicated to the creativity linked to folk religion, which also includes reverse glass paintings and wooden nativity scenes. The top floor is an actual attic of a historical house with many specific items of local provenance. There is also a children’s playroom where kids can learn about certain phenomena from the Krkonose’s history. The ground floor is used for short-term thematic exhibitions.
